At COP30 in Belém, Brazil, Dr. Josie Antonucci di Carvalho from the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity (HIFMB) will highlight Europe’s efforts to bridge science and policy for marine biodiversity.

What is COP?
COP is the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). It brings world leaders, negotiators and advocates together to confront the global climate crisis.

Through BioAgora, a Horizon Europe-funded project, Josie contributes to KEN-Marine (Knowledge Exchange Networks), a network connecting marine research with policy needs across Europe.

KEN-Marine aims to:

  • Share knowledge on marine biodiversity
  • Close the gap between science and policy
  • Mainstream ocean conservation in decision-making
  • Support EU targets, including legally protecting 30% of EU seas

Josie will speak at two side events:

  • Science-Policy Interfaces for Biodiversity & Climate: Experiences from Europe, Latin America & Africa (17 Nov, 16:45–18:15, Room 4)
  • Sino-German Track II Dialogue on Climate Change and Sustainable Development (17 Nov, 11:30–12:30, German Pavilion)

“By showcasing KEN-Marine at COP30, I hope to strengthen the visibility of the ocean in the political arena and promote an integrated approach where climate, biodiversity, and the ocean are inseparable.”
