Research Interests
My doctoral work at the HIFMB aims to explore the relationship between marine governance and emotion. I am currently focused on a case of wild seaweed extraction in Ireland and the emotional tensions surrounding the history and governance of Irish waters. I work at the intersection of multiple disciplines – geography, ecology, social sciences, policy – and this interdisciplinarity is reflected in my work. I enjoy the challenge of weaving together academic and artistic practice, particularly through poetry and creative writing. I am particularly interested in finding creative ways to map ‘the unmappable’ – emotion, perception, experience, story – and pushing the boundaries of what geography means and does. My research here will challenge marine governance to take emotions seriously – for how can we meaningfully engage with the ‘human dimension’ of the oceans otherwise?
