The Ocean Science Jam is a new project which brings together musicians, artists, dancers, performers and marine biodiversity scientists to respond creatively in real time to visual and audio cues based on a theme related to marine scientists work at the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity at the University of Oldenburg (HIFMB) and the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI).
A United Nations Decade Activity
The first session took place on the 12th of October 2023
The second session took place on January 25th 2024.
How it works
Each jam session is centred around a different theme.
Before each jam session the scientists at HIFMB will curate various images/sounds/videos from their research ready for the evening which is used to provoke the audience.
Each prompt introduces the audience to some of the main challenges and questions facing marine biodiversity in the respective field of the theme.
On the night, we project the cues giving a brief explanation before each one and ask the audience to then respond in real time to what they are seeing and create something entirely spontaneously in reaction to how they interpret the scientific data.
Once the performance naturally concludes, we then show the next visual cue on the screen and proceed to create a new response.
By the end of the evening, we will have numerous creative reinterpretations in response to our scientists works.
Why do we do this?
1) To share our science with the broader community in a fun and interactive way.
2) To publicise the work of the HIFMB beyond academic circles and increase the diversity of people who are able to access our research.
3) To mix creativity with science in an integrative way. At the end of each session, we will have numerous creative pieces based on each theme, opening up new ways for our data to be interpreted.
4) To highlight the results of co-creation through sharing knowledges through the lens of marine biodiversity.
