Qualitative Marine Methods Lab (QualiLab)

The Qualitative Marine Methods Lab (QualiLab) provides dedicated infrastructure to support qualitative research in marine and coastal environments.

We offer a wide range of high-quality equipment to support diverse research projects.

Qualitative research employs a wide range of approaches to document and understand how environments are experienced, the meanings they hold, and the relationships they encompass. Rather than relying on numbers and statistics, qualitative research gathers words, observations, images, as well as thoughts, perspectives, and interpretations to gain rich insights into human–environment relationships. Such research explores complex, messy interlocking socio-cultural, (geo)political and environmental viewpoints on issues such as biodiversity, conservation, governance and policy. Qualitative methods include (but are not limited to) interviews, observations, focus group discussions, textual analysis, archival research, photovoice, mobile methods and many more. These approaches require resources and equipment, which the QualiLab provides.

The Qualitative Marine Methods Lab is fully equipped with state-of-the-art apparatus to perform high-quality audio and video recording, event and workshop facilitation, participatory and art-based research, and support for fieldwork. Items include high-end Dictaphones, DSLR cameras, and even waterproof field diaries. It operates as a simple and flexible lending system, with its own borrowing platform, equipment centrally stored and available according to project needs. A catalogue and a protocol for equipment use are also available. Initiated by the Marine Governance working group and supported by the Marine Policy and Management working group since 2026, QualiLab fosters collaboration and supports a wide range of marine research projects.
